How To: Watch TV on Your Computer About

In order to use your computer as a television, you need what is known as a TV capture card, that you install into a PCI slot (the same slot your phone modem is in--most computers have at least three) and connect your coaxial cable to in order to be able to pick up the channels to watch. The process is not too overly complicated, and it's a great way to save money if you need an extra television in your home. Capture cards will cost you anywhere from $25-$150, depending on the quality and features of the card. Some will come with remotes, too.

Step One

Comparison shop and read reviews on TV capture cards. Choose and purchase one you think will work best for your needs and computer system. Here are some recommendations for you to make your search easier: ADS Technologies hp pavilion zv5000 Battery, Pinnacle, and KWorld.

Step Two

Disconnect the power from your computer. Remove the casing from your computer, being sure to touch the case to discharge any static electricity to make sure you do not damage any of your computer components. Using a screw driver, remove the metal cover over the backing of your computer so that you can fit the capture card into the slot.

Gently push the card into the slot, and screw it in place in the back of the computer to ensure a snug fit.

Replace the computer cover, reconnect the power, and reboot your system.

Be sure to connect a working coaxial cable into the capture card from the back of your computer, too.

Step Three

Insert the CD that came along with the TV capture card. Install the drivers before beginning to use the card. There should also be a program that you will use as your TV included. Install this as well. To install these programs, double click on the CD drive where the disc is located, and look for a .exe file. Then double click that file and allow it to run. Follow all on screen instructions.

Step Four

Now that everything is installed, open the TV program, and allow it to detect your channels. Familiarize yourself with the program by reading the manual that comes along with the card, or checking out the help section of the program. Find a program, and enjoy lenovo laptop adapters!
